Placenames Database of Ireland

FIONTAR* has created the Placenames Database of Ireland in collaboration with The Placenames Branch (Department of Arts, Heritage and the Gaeltacht). This is a comprehensive management system for data, archival records and placenames research conducted by the State. The public website is primarily aimed at journalists and translators, students and teachers, historians and researchers in genealogy. It is a public resource for Irish people at home and abroad, and for all those who appreciate the rich heritage of Irish placenames.

www.logainm.ie is the website which provides the official Irish-language names of almost 100,000 towns, streets and post offices throughout the country

Work on www.logainm.ie is ongoing and more placenames, sound files and new interactive features are added to the website on a continuous basis. www.logainm.ie is being developed by Fiontar, Dublin City University’s Irish-medium teaching and research unit, in collaboration with the Placenames Branch of the Department of Arts, Heritage and the Gaeltacht.

Additionally they provide  | a Sound Archive  | Educational resources  agus Acmhainní oideachais idirghníomhacha

Tá na hacmhainní oideachais idirghníomhacha seo á soláthar mar áis do theagascóirí agus d’fhoghlaimeoirí. Cuid lárnach d’oidhreacht na hÉireann is ea na logainmneacha. Tá súil againn mar sin go spreagfaidh na hacmhainní seo spéis daoine iontu. Tá na hacmhainní i nGaeilge agus tá siad bunaithe ar na hacmhainní oideachais atá ar fáil ar www.logainm.ie.

Fiontar is an interdisciplinary school which is internationally recognised for the quality of programmes delivered and research conduction at the school through Irish.
